What is Pinctada margaritifera?

Pinctada margaritifera, commonly known as the black-lip pearl oyster, is a species of pearl oyster, a saltwater mollusk, a marine bivalve mollusk in the family Pteriidae. This species is common in the Indo-Pacific within tropical coral reefs.

Pinctada margaritifera is usually light grey to silvery grey and can weigh up to 5 kg and 30 cm in size, usually twice the size of Japanese sea shells, and they can live an average of 30 years and also produce larger pearls.

What are the morphological characteristics of the Pinctada margaritifera

Slightly smaller in size than the white Pinctada margaritifera, the adult shell is about 13 cm long. Pinctada margaritifera shell height is 12 cm and shell thickness is 3 cm. The Pinctada margaritifera is large and irregularly shaped.

The Pinctada margaritifera surface is black or black-brown with white radiating lines, and the articulation is short and toothless. Both ears are inconspicuous, or the anterior ear is short and the posterior ear is reduced.

The closed Pinctada margaritifera muscle scar is large and not pointed at the top. The scales growing on the shell surface are circumscribed and arranged in an imbricate pattern.

The pedipalp is particularly well-developed, extending from the pedipalp pore and then becoming filiform. On the inner side of the Pinctada margaritifera, the pearl layer has a silvery white glow with red and green iridescence, and the perimeter of the pearl layer is dark green or silvery grey.

What are the habits of the Pinctada margaritifera

Pinctada margaritifera prefer to live in waters with good currents and little variation in water temperature and salinity, and they generally live in water layers of 10-40 meters. On the seabed, most of them are attached to the rocks or coral reefs with well-developed filaments. The diet is generally dominated by diatoms and other microscopic organisms.

What are the distributions of Pinctada margaritifera

There are two main natural sources of Pinctada margaritifera:

One is the island of Tahiti in the Polynesian Islands, which produces 95% of the world’s black pearls;

The second is Penrhyn and Majuhiiki Islands in the Cook Islands, which produce 4% of the total.

The other Pacific islands produce less than one percent. These two areas are located in the south-central Pacific Ocean.
