What is Pinctada maxima?

Pinctada maxima is a species of pearl oyster, a marine bivalve mollusk in the family Pteriidae, the pearl oysters.
There are two different color varieties of Pinctada maxima: the Gold-lipped oyster and the Silver-lipped oyster. These bivalves are the largest pearl oysters in the world.

They have a very strong inner shell layer composed of nacre, also known as the “mother-of-pearl” and are important to the cultured pearl industry as they are cultivated to produce South Sea pearls.

Characteristics of the Pinctada maxima pearl oyster shell

The pearl shell of Pinctada maxima is very thick, with a slightly elevated left shell and a flatter right shell. The front ear is more prominent, while the back ear is rounded and blunt.

The Pinctada maxima pearl shell is mostly brownish in color, with the top layer of scales very tightly packed and the back edge of the shell freer.

Inside the Pinctada maxima pearl shell is a thick layer of pearls, which are silvery white. The edges are beautifully horned in the white or silver-lipped oyster and the gold-lipped oyster.
